NEW CANAAN -- Although the final score may not have been indicative of the competitive tennis that was played at New Canaan High School on Thursday afternoon, the Staples boys team nevertheless made a statement with a 7-0 victory over New Canaan.
As a team, the Wreckers would lose just three sets.
With his team up 3-0 overall, Staples No. 5 Baxter Stein held off Spencer Lambdin for a 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 victory, clinching the match for the Wreckers.
"It was a very competitive match. He played very well and I was battling nerves a little bit," Stein said. "(Winning the clincher) is always a plus. I got a little tight, but I found a way to push the nerves aside and pull through."
Perhaps the two most competitive matches of the day were at the top two singles spots.
At first singles, Staples' Josh Moskovitz edged New Canaan's Will Burger 6-4, 7-5, 6-3.
"It was tough. It was a little windy, but we're pretty used to it," Burger said. "It came down to holding serve and who had more fight in them today. It's early in the season, but I can definitely feel the tension on the big points."
"It was really good. I played well and pulled out a really good win," Moskovitz said. "To pull of a big win is really cool. It's definitely a confidence booster."
"Today is the first day the wind screens were fully up, and that kind of altered the conditions we were playing in. The last two weeks there were massive gusts of wind, and today was completely different," Worcester said. "All I can say is Staples played very well. It's really a matter of improving, but I'm pretty confident that we can take them next time."
Staples gained an early 2-0 advantage after third singles and first doubles finished nearly simultaneously. At third singles, Luke Foreman bested Devin McVeigh 6-0, 6-2. At first doubles, the Staples' tandem of Jake Hirschberg and Sterling Price scored a 6-3, 6-3 win over New Canaan's Andrew Penchuck and Digby Philpott.
Shortly thereafter, Staples went up 3-0 when Jack Reardon finished off Tim Casavant 6-3, 6-3 at fourth singles.
Staples is back in action at home against Brien McMahon on Monday at 4 p.m. and New Canaan next takes to the courts on Saturday at Fairfield Prep at 4 p.m.
