Ten players on the New Canaan High School football team -- including six starters -- were suspended before Friday night's game with Brien McMahon High, but team officials have so far refused to say why.

Head Coach Lou Marinelli and Athletic Director Jay Egan as of Saturday said only that the suspensions were meted out because of an unspecified "violation of team rules."

New Canaan, however, prevailed over the visiting Norwalk team, 38-14.

"It has been a terrible week," Marinelli said after the game. "Just a lot of distractions. I'm proud of the kids the way they really hung together. Even the kids who were in trouble, they hung around, played on the scout team and did whatever they could."

"I can't say anything other than it was a violation of team rules," Egan said. "As far as the school is concerned, these are high school students, and it's a disciplinary matter. It is a team disciplinary action that is confidential."
