New Canaan U12 girls Red soccer team

The New Canaan U12 girls Red team battled hard against the Newtown Blue team on Sunday, Sept. 21 in a comeback effort. Down 1-0 early, the girls fought back to a tie when Courtney O'Connell evened the score with a shot set up by Sophie Salmini. In the second half, the girls drove numerous shots at goal, and Emma Schuh ultimately succeeded with an assist from Lydon Cooney. New Canaan's defensive play was solid throughout the game, headed by Abby Van Dussen, Annabelle Catlin, Anna Zoccolillo, and Charlotte Gelhaus.

One day earlier, New Canaan defeated the Watertown Hurricanes 4-0. Sadie Frame started the ball rolling when she scored off an upfield from defender McKenna Harden. Amanda Miller later received a cross from O'Connell and tipped it in under the cross bar. Next, Emma Ognibene took a quick pass off Izzy Miller and placed the ball for Quinn Mc Kiernanm, who scored before the end of the half.

In the second half, O'Connell scored the final goal off a rebound taken by Lydon Cooney. Goalies Emma Gibbens and Samantha Finn celebrated their second shutout of the season, aided by the defensive play of Molly Murphy, Sydney Watchmaker and Harden.

New Canaan U9 Girls Red soccer team

The New Canaan U9 Girls Red soccer team continued its strong season with a 7-1 win against Shelton. New Canaan came out in the first half dominating the ball and charging the goal. First, Isabel Cavanagh and Ava Pertusiello each scored goals. Then, Kailee See scored on a solo breakaway by striking the ball top shelf moments before halftime.

In the second half, Devon Russell scored two goals, one assisted by Lexie Tully, and continued the offensive momentum for the Red. Tully and Katie Quill also tallied goals via high shots into the net.

Maggie Murphy, Tema Wagner, Fiona Mueller, Alexandra Gelvin, and second-half goalie See played well on defense to secure the win.

New Canaan 5th/6th grade Black field hockey team

The New Canaan 5th-6th grade Black team played its first away game of the season at Darien. New Canaan took possession of the ball and held it for much of the first 10 minutes of the game, during which time they drew two foot penalties but were unable to score. Strong attempts on goal from forwards Molly Mitchell, Carolyn Russell, Caroline Sibbett and midfielders Carolyn Beecher and Ingrid Weissman were blocked by the Darien defense. After several attempts by New Canaan to score off of corners, Darien took possession at the mid-point of the first half and scored a goal on first-time goalie Maeson Wagner. Darien followed up its first score with another drive toward the New Canaan goal, but this time Wagner was able to block the shot and the score remained 1-0 Darien. The half ended with New Canaan in possession, drawing another corner but still no score.

In the second half, New Canaan controlled possession of the ball with aggressive plays by Madison Grenauer, Sydney Sheffield, Daisy Crystal and Kiera Cooney on defense. The offensive forwards and midfield working together to keep possession of the ball. They were able to thwart the Darien offense with clears and ball movement.

The Rams kept fighting and Jordan Walker nearly scored following an impressive drive that nearly spanned the field. Then, Ellie Luciano pounded a shot past Darien's goalie with an assist from Becky Panella to tie the game. In the final seconds, Molly Mitchell nearly scored, but the game finished 1-1.

New Canaan 8th grade Red field hockey team

On Sunday afternoon, the New Canaan U14 Girls Red field hockey team won a hard-fought game on the road at Westport 1-0.

During the first half, defenders Chloe Sigg, Caroline O'dea and Celia Solkolowski kept the ball down toward the Westport goal. There were four shots on goal, but none went in. Forwards Katie Cutler, Sadie Seelert, Katherine Pellegrino and Meghan Mitchell all had shots on goal before halftime.

In the second half, Meghan Mitchell brought the ball down and passed to forward Katie Tan, who scored the game's only goal. New Canaan goalie Caroline Cioffi then saved shot after shot for the shutout.

New Canaaan will next play Saturday against Fairfield at home.

New Canaan 5th/6th grade White field hockey team

The New Canaan 5th/6th grade White team's season opener versus Darien's Syracuse team ended in a 1-1 tie Saturday. A spirited crowd of parents, grandparents and kids cheered alongside coach Nancy Harris, particularly when New Canaan's Jayda Mysogland scored a goal. The defense assisted goalie Cecily Peter and successfully blocked many shots. The entire team played well together and is looking forward to the season ahead.
