New Canaan lacrosse beats John Jay (NY)

NEW CANAAN — If there’s one thing the New Canaan girls lacrosse team has showed it can do this is year it’s run.
Fueled by forcing turnovers in the defensive zone and capitalizing in transition, the Rams defeated John Jay (NY) at home Tuesday to the tune of 13-4.
“We were finishing on the rides, we did a really good job of that today,” New Canaan coach Kristin Woods said of her team’s runouts. “I think our hustle and our athleticism definitely paid off, especially in these first two games. We got a lot to work on, there are some things I was frustrated with but we look good in our second game out.”
On the very first possession of the game John Jay scored off the stick of Cara O’Reilly but New Canaan would go on to score the next three and eventually take an 8-3 lead into the half.
Senior Kylie Murphy had a hat trick in the first, scoring in a variety of ways. First on a quick cut in front then on a free position and finishing on a transition opportunity.
Assisting on the first was Karlie Bucci who had two assists and two goals in the contest.
“Our team fought hard in the first half,” Indians assistant Alex Fitzpatrick said. “And then the second half we were right there but we just kind of gave it back to them and unfortunately they capitalized.”
“We have a dynamic attack and we don’t rely on just one or two people,” Woods said. “All seven of them can score at any given point in time, our senior leadership on the attacking end is going to pay off in the long run.”
Despite the 0-3 start to its season the young John Jay team is looking to absorb all it can from an extremely difficult schedule that sees it play not just Section 1 teams in New York but several FCIAC teams such as New Canaan and Greenwich.
“It helps us play the best, and in turn helps our team become a better team,” Fitzpatrick said. “And we feel that facing harder teams allows our girls to learn and realize how other teams play and incorporate their tactics into our game to make us better.”
