DARIEN - Catherine Granito and the rest of the seniors on the New Canaan girls hockey team know the next time they lose a game that is it.

There is no next period, no next game and no next season. She will just turn in her red, black and white jersey and that will be it for her hockey career.

Granito is not ready for that moment just yet.

The senior captain scored her second goal of the game with 5:25 remaining in regulation, breaking a tie and sending the No. 3 Rams to a 3-2 win over No. 6 Conard/Hall in the quarterfinals of the girls state tournament at Darien Ice Rink Monday evening.

New Canaan will face the winner of Monday night’s No. 2 East Catholic/Glastonbury/South Windsor against No. 7 Amity/North Haven/Cheshire Wednesday in the semifinals at Shelton.

Granito said as the moments ticked away in the third period she was getting more and more tense until finally breaking through with the winning goal.

“You are either going home or you are staying and whoever has more heart and has the mindset of putting the puck in the back of the net is staying and that’s what we did today,” Granito said. “None of us are playing hockey in college and we have all been playing since we were little and you can’t give up now because this is it.”

Granito scored the game’s first goal less than 30 seconds into the first period.

The Rams looked like they may pull away when Mia Carroll scored a power-play goal with 7:52 left in the first as New Canaan was dominating possession and shots on goal.

In fact, the Rams out-shot the Warchiefs 47-16 for the game.

However, the Warchiefs were not done with Emma Gotthelf scoring a short-handed goal with 4:16 left in the second.

The speedy Gotthelf was not finished, scoring again with just 14 seconds left in the second, tying the game 2-2.

It stayed that way until Granito came through with the winner in the third.

New Canaan coach Rich Bulan said he knew Conard/Hall would play the Rams tough and he was just glad to survive and advance.

“We beat them earlier in the year 4-1, but it was this type of game and we knew it would be tough again,” Bulan said. “These are the games you really like winning because they are not pretty. You had a lead, you were dominating then we got a little shaky, but you come back and win and it shows something, and it’s a character builder.”

And Bulan was not surprised at all it was Granito bookending the game with goals.

“She gets the one to start it off and she gets the one to cap it off,” Bulan said. “We have been talking to her about how she’s a great player, and great players have to step up at big times and she ended the game tonight. Nice to start us off, nice to finish us off. I’ll take it.”
