Grumman Hill Road gets its name from a Fairfield County family with a legacy in the area that dates back to the 1600s. Many from the family lived in the area, and it’s likely that the Grummans owned the property when the home at 95 Grumman Hill Road made its debut in 1780.

It was before the town of Wilton became incorporated, before meticulous land records were kept here, according to the property’s current owner, who has listed the $1.39 million property for sale with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage.

The sellers lived here since 2007, when they bought the home, which had benefited from two major renovations long before they arrived — one in the 1920s and the next in 1998.

They soon met a neighbor who had grown up in the home and learned that the bedroom that had been hers was then assigned to the seller’s 5-year old, precisely the age she’d been when it had been her room. It was the neighbor’s father who had built one of the sellers’ favorite rooms, the home’s library.

Despite the renovation and remodeling work that’s been done in the centuries since, there are still some original features that remain. For example, the wide-planked hardwood floorboards are still found in both the library and the formal dining room. A massive, three-sided fireplace remains. It sits between the family room, dining room and library; however, per current code, two of the exposures have been closed and are purely decorative. A freestanding wood stove has been added to the operational hearth.

Many of the vintage Dutch doors remain, and in one of the bedrooms, there’s a now-silent bell that had once been used to summon staff.

In its early years, the home was likely bustling with family and staff. What is now the two-car garage used to be servants’ quarters. It was originally separate from the main residence, but during one of the renovations, it was attached to the main house with the clever insertion of a sun porch.

The original structure’s architecture also featured a surprising amount of storage space. There are built-ins and shelving and cabinetry in many of the rooms, and that’s one of the things that really appealed to the sellers when they were originally considering this home for their family. The second level also has convenient cedar-lined and linen closets.

Among the improvements the sellers have made during their tenure here was the remodeling of the master bath, which is now adorned in Carrara marble.

To prepare the home for sale, the sellers repainted all the interior trim and moldings, and many of the interior room walls got fresh coats, as well.

All of the home’s six bedrooms are located on the second level, and the floor plan for the level proved invaluable for the sellers’ family. Four of the bedrooms, including the master are on one side of the home, while two additional bedrooms are located on the other. Those two bedrooms were leveraged as a guest suite and live-in quarters for an au pair with private stairs leading down the home’s kitchen.

The kitchen was also updated a bit. When the sellers purchased the home in 2007, the space had a definitively modern vibe, a stark contrast to the historic colonial decor of the rest of the home. They kept the skylights, which welcome in lots of natural light, and the granite countertops, but the cabinets were given a new color of “chalk” paint — Chateau Grey — and new hardware. They added a porcelain sink and salvaged wood from a shed they took down, wrapping the island, overhead beams and the kitchen hood with the reclaimed wood. They also chose a tumbled Travertine subway-tile pattern for the backsplash, which has a “rustic, Old World charm,” according to the seller.

The lot spans 1.48 acres, and the seller pointed out the expansive, manicured backyard — so big and level that it served as a practice baseball field when the local fields were too wet and muddy for the kids to use. The yard is also a perfect spot for raised-bed gardens. The sellers reported that they’ve grown a variety of vegetables here, including lettuces, tomatoes, green beans, squash, zucchini, peppers and more.

The third-level attic space was finished by the seller, creating a huge, open playroom — though the bonus room could be used for any number of intentions.

There’s a barn on the property with a beamed-ceilinged great room, a sitting room, a kitchen and dining space, a bedroom and a partial bathroom. It was built in 1998 and may have served as a home office for the owners then. It’s not a “legal rental,” the homeowner was quick to stipulate, but it makes for a wonderful space for an office, creative studio or even party space, she suggested.

One of the greatest perks of living here has been proximity, the seller suggested. It affords an easy commute to New York City via the South Norwalk train station, and the centers of Wilton, Westport and South Norwalk are nearby.
