On the Market: New Canaan’s Mills House is a mid century marvel
NEW CANAAN — It was nearly four decades ago when a young professional couple came to New Canaan looking for a contemporary house in a private setting. He, a prominent psychiatrist, was with a patient when his wife called to say she had found the perfect place, a mid-century modern at 68 Indian Waters Drive.
Although he was unable to leave his office to tour the house, she told him over the telephone, “I'm going to buy the house.” Before he could respond she hung up the phone, went immediately to their attorney and got a deposit, buying the house before he even had a chance to see it. He wasn’t disappointed when he did. That expensive impulse purchase was not a mistake. Both of them loved the house and its beautiful wooded surroundings with a stream running along the edge of the property. The 3,801-square-foot house has been their home for the last 37 years.
The “Mills House” was built in 1950 for another couple, Barbara and James Mills. It was designed by architects from the renowned Stamford firm Sherwood, Mills & Smith, and it was built by Ted Hobbs on 3.14-acre level and sloping wooded acres, and it features one-level living but for two second floor rooms - a family room and a library. A large addition was constructed in 1992, giving the house a two-car garage, a wood deck, and a screened porch.
It was two years later in a separate renovation project that they transformed the small galley kitchen into a spacious, open, light-filled chef’s kitchen with a Garland commercial range. “I got the kitchen I wanted. I sat down with pencil and paper and started designing,” said the female homeowner.
Every effort was made in the initial design and construction and the later expansion to blur the line between the interior and exterior. Its many windows and walls of glass invite the outdoors inside. Two flagstone terraces expand the interior footprint outside. The open layout of the house and the exterior features have allowed this couple to entertain as many as 100 guests at a time.
The property has a semi-circular driveway that leads to a generous parking area in front of the house. The front door opens to the foyer, which has a slate floor. The spacious formal living room has a wall of brick that holds the corner fireplace with a long floating slate hearth. The formal dining room has a wall of built-in china cabinet drawers and glass shelves.
In the kitchen the Garland range has six burners, a large two-tiered griddle area, and double ovens. Other features include floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, granite counters, pantry, two dishwashers and other stainless appliances, a vaulted ceiling, skylight, and two center islands - one small and one large with two stainless sinks. The large eat-in area has a door to one of the terraces and it also adjoins a screened porch.
