On the Market / Georgian Classic beautifully renovated and restored
NEW CANAAN — The elegance of old Hollywood meets the 21st century in the shingle-and-stone Georgian colonial house at 1102 Oenoke Ridge Road, which for many years was the weekend home of Paul and Daisy Soros, Hungarian immigrants and American philanthropists who established the Fellowship for New Americans, a program that supported immigrants and children of immigrants.
When this classically beautiful 12-room house was first built in 1938, it was given distinctive decorative millwork and architectural details that set it apart from similar houses. When the 4,795-square-foot house was more recently renovated and restored from top to bottom to suit modern life, it was given top amenities that residents of this millennium have come to expect.
The features of yesteryear, which were preserved in the renovation and updating project, include arched doorways, attractive millwork and moldings, rounded windows, plaster walls and ceilings, grand living spaces and elegant built-ins. Modern features include custom cabinetry, Marvin thermal windows, updated marble baths, new recessed lighting and Bosch appliances in the chef’s kitchen. The house received refinished hardwood floors, the entire interior was custom painted and it got a new asphalt shingle roof.
Stone pillars topped with lanterns mark the entrance to the 5.2-acre largely level property. Its beautiful landscaping and perennial English gardens provide the perfect setting for this house. The house is set well back from the road. The wide open manicured lawn is dotted with mature trees, and a blanket of pachysandra close to the house.
Architectural detailing begins on the front façade. The front door is framed by pilasters of flat fluted columns, a keystone and decorative dentil molding. Above the front door is an arched transom of leaded glass. The door opens to a front-to-back center hall with a patterned marble floor, a barrel ceiling and cover lighting. The foyer has a glamorous powder room with a built-in vanity table and mirror, and provides access into the formal living room, the formal dining room and a large covered bluestone terrace. The lintels above each entryway offer a hint as to what type of space the person is about to enter.
On the lintel of the entry from the foyer to the terrace the carved millwork depicts a basket of flowers. Indeed, outside there are many types of flowers in the gardens, and the terrace sits beneath a pergola laden with wisteria vines. The lintel at the entrance to the dining room has carved bunting. The dining room has two built-in china cabinets with exquisite detailed molding and a fireplace.
Step down into the living room, which has a fireplace and built-in shelving. It has a rounded alcove and its windows are rounded. The family room also has rounded windows. It accesses a large screened sun porch with a slate floor. A second door accesses the side yard, where there is a water fountain. In the backyard there is an in-ground swimming pool.

Western light fills the new chef’s kitchen, which features a center island with a “waterfall” marble counter, the latest trend in kitchen design. The counter does not stay on top of the island, but “spills” over the side and continues down to the floor. Other kitchen features include an eat-in area, a ceramic tile backsplash and a porcelain floor that resembles wood. This same flooring is also found in the mudroom, which has built-in cubbies. There is also a small room with a built-in desk area that can serve as a home command center, and a laundry room.
On the second floor the architectural details continue. The master suite has a marble fireplace with a decorative mantel that includes flourishes resembling cameos or Wedgewood china. French doors lead to a private balcony. It also has two walk-in closets and a marble bath. There are three other bedrooms on this floor, all en suite. One of them has a fireplace. At the end of the hall there are steps down into an au pair suite.
