NEW CANAAN — There’s probably not enough holiday wrapping paper in all of Fairfield County to cover the contemporary house at 231 Jelliff Mill Road. Wrapped or not this house would be the perfect holiday gift to one’s self; especially someone purchasing their first home or looking to down-size. And no need to wait until after the holidays to get the “sale” price.
Several real estate industry websites indicate that the median listing price of a house in New Canaan is $1.7 million. With that in mind, the contemporary house at 231 Jelliff Mill Road is a bargain at the sum of $720,000, making it a perfect starter home or a place for empty nesters. It is in a neighborhood where houses are, by and large, valued at more than a million dollars.
The five-room beige shingle house sits on a largely level property of just over three-quarters of an acre surrounded on three sides by a belt of lush greenery creating a private setting with mature trees, perennial gardens, and fieldstone walls. The current owner has quite a green thumb, which is reflected in the gardens.
The house has 1,691 square feet of living space on one level and additional spaces above and below that would add substantially to the square footage if the next owner chose to finish them. The walk-up attic could add another two bedrooms and the full unfinished basement has a number of possibilities as a game or play room. It currently has the laundry room, “storage galore,” and access to the attached two-car tandem garage.
Built in 1950, this house has received several recent improvements to make it appropriate to modern life. Its kitchen was updated, as were its baths, and the hardwood floors in four of the five rooms were recently refinished. The house is flexible enough to accommodate modern or traditional décor.

At the front of the property the generous gravel driveway provides ample parking for family members and guests. Steps lead up to the sizable raised wood deck, where there is a door with a decorative leaded glass window that opens into the chef’s kitchen. That kitchen reflects the love for cooking and entertaining that the current owner enjoys. It features a vaulted ceiling and a wall of nearly floor-to-ceiling windows flooding the room with natural light. It also has a center island with pendant lighting above it, granite counters, two stainless steel sinks, custom cabinetry including some glass-front cabinets, and two pantries.
Appliances include a refrigerator with French doors and a propane-fueled range. The backsplash comprises hand-painted patterned ceramic tiles imported from Portugal, and there is also a greenhouse-style window that would be a great place to grow culinary herbs year-round. Sliding doors lead from the kitchen to a smaller wood deck, which has stairs down to the red brick patio and yard. The barbecue and high-end Brown Jordan outdoor furniture will stay with the house. Pocket doors separate the kitchen from the dining room, which has a skylight and a tall picture window that looks down to the patio.
