NEW CANAAN — A modest ranch had stood at 15 Orchard Drive until the current owners tore it down several years ago and in 2015 built in its place a 6,300-square-foot custom colonial house.

The putty-colored shingle house has a turret and because of that feature some of the neighborhood children call it a castle. This house does have a regal presence, and yet it is also warm and inviting.

“We designed each room with our main focus to be planned around family,” said Kerri Heffernan-Curtin, the listing agent and one of the owners. Curtin said this house was always bustling with activity, not just with her family but with neighbors and their kids as well. They played kickball and flashlight tag in the large, level backyard. The property is just under a half an acre, which is unusually large in this section of town only a mile from downtown shops, restaurants, and the train station. They also hosted numerous backyard barbecues with help from the built-in grill on the bluestone patio, which also has a stone sitting wall. And they viewed movies on the large covered patio, which has an outdoor fireplace where they roasted marshmallows and popped “enough popcorn to feed an army.”

“Within these walls live the memories of the happiness we knew here. The laughter of family and friends is etched into the beams,” Curtin said.

Within these walls there are also 10 rooms of unique architectural details, decorative molding and millwork, and arts and crafts-style windows. The house is well designed with some unusual features. Rather than stepping into an entrance foyer from the front door there is a spacious reception hall with a tray ceiling. The foyer is found behind the reception hall in the center of the residence and it houses the dramatic curved staircase to the second floor.

Those family and friends who come from farther away have ample room to park in the wide crushed stone driveway lined in Belgium block. A stone path leads to the covered entrance. Inside, the turret is incorporated into the formal living room creating a music alcove that could accommodate a grand piano. There is also a fireplace with a marble surround, yellow brick firebox, and decorative mantel. A wide arched and paneled entryway provides access into the formal dining room, which has wainscoting on the lower walls.

Another arched and paneled entryway leads into the interior foyer, where there is an alcove for displays of artwork with special art lighting. The office or library has cherry paneling on the lower walls and on the coffered ceiling, and a wall of built-in bookshelves and lower cabinets.

The family room has a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace flanked by doors to the covered part of the patio with the outdoor fireplace.
