On the Market: A young New Canaan house among history
NEW CANAAN — Patriot Roger Sherman, signer of the Declaration of Independence and other significant U.S. documents, is remembered daily at the Roger Sherman Inn, a landmark bed and breakfast in New Canaan housed in an 18th century historic structure.
The inn sits at the corner of Oenoke Ridge Road (Rt. 124) and Holmewood Lane, the latter being a narrow and private cul-de-sac that might otherwise go unnoticed. What should not go unnoticed is the 20th century colonial house at 6 Holmewood Lane at the end of this quiet lane. At only 21 years in existence this house may lack the history of the Roger Sherman Inn but it more than makes up for it in charm, modern amenities, and proximity to downtown New Canaan and the train station, which are within walking distance. So is the inn and the New Canaan Nature Center.
This 3,746-square-foot house was built in 1996 and it contains a great flow from room to room, tall ceilings, large windows looking out to the bluestone patio, an attractively landscaped yard, and something that most houses do not have - two family rooms. One is a more intimate space, which could be used as a den, and the other is quite large and has a two-story cathedral ceiling with exposed beams, French doors topped with an arched window to the patio, and a Palladium window on the opposite wall.
The house sits on a level and sloping lot of just over a half an acre and there is a wide bluestone path and steps to the front entrance. The front door is framed by sidelights and a transom. From the foyer there are folding French doors that lead into the formal living room, the walls of which are adorned in an attractive wallpaper. It has a bay/bow window area. Another set of the folding doors separates the living room from the smaller of the family rooms.
This first family room is open to the kitchen and features a red brick fireplace with white wood mantel and sliding doors to the patio, which is bordered by stone sitting walls. On the other side of the foyer is entrance to the formal dining room, which has chair railing on the walls and a café-style door to access the kitchen where there is a breakfast nook, built-in desk area, a triangular center island, and high-end appliances including a Viking range and Bosch dishwasher.
