NEW CANAAN — Most people think of New Canaan’s country roads and village streets as dotted with traditional New England colonial houses, stately mansions and farmhouses, and that was probably true up until the time that the Harvard Five arrived in the 1940s.

Marcel Breuer, an instructor at Harvard, and his students John M. Johansen, Landis Gores, Philip Johnson and Eliot Noyes are credited with rocking the world of architectural design, according to an article in the online architecture design magazine PureContemporary.com. Among the contemporary structures they added to the local landscape is Philip Johnson’s Glass House, one of the most notable houses in the world.

The contemporary farmhouse at 392 Brushy Ridge Road was not built by one of the Harvard Five, but its design and construction pay homage to their vision and even take it a step further into the future. This 4,747-square-foot house, built in 2010 and completed in 2011, has geo-thermal and solar heating, and there is hydronic radiant heat in all the flooring surfaces. They are heated with hot water, which brings some welcome humidity into the house, a real plus in winter months.

Even an outdoor terrace has radiant heat so there is no need to shovel snow to clear it. The snow just melts away. There is also an outdoor fireplace on this 2.65-acre property.

This house has a SoHo feel created by its open floor plan, loft space, floating staircases with LED lighting, metal bannisters, straight angles, and exposed tubular air-handlers on the ceiling. Two of its baths have illuminated resin sinks; the one on the first floor glows green and the one in the finished lower level has an electric blue hue. These two baths, the master bath, and the kitchen have walls of very thin, colorful glass tiles and these backsplashes that add to the visual appeal of this house.

Enter the house by way of the covered front porch. Once inside the dining room comes into view with a straight line into the kitchen and family room, all open one to the other. To the right of the foyer is the living room, which has a fireplace and an opaque glass sliding wall that serves as a privacy screen. The windows in the living and family rooms are floor-to ceiling. The family room has French doors to the backyard. In the kitchen there are two center islands, one of which has a breakfast bar that accommodates three stools.

On the second floor, the landing is open creating loft space. All three bedrooms are en suite. The master bedroom has a vaulted ceiling with the tubular air-handlers, a contemporary-styled fireplace, and two walls of cabinets and closets. The master bath has a tub-filler that is located in the ceiling and when turned on produces a column of water. One of the bedrooms is above the three-car garage. It can also serve as office space.

This spectacular entertainment center includes an exercise room with a mirrored wall, a home theater/media room with a nine-foot projection screen, and a long, full-service bar that has glass-front cabinets with glass shelving and interior lighting, a backsplash along one wall comprising rocks, sink, wine and beverage refrigerators, and a marble counter with room for four stools.
