The New Canaan YMCA is now accepting applications for its "All Kids are Our Kids" college scholarship. The deadline for filing an application is Friday, May 11.

Supported by the YMCA's annual support campaign, the scholarship was established in 2007 to enable a high school senior to pursue a college education, and an award of $5,000 will be made this year to a deserving recipient.

"The New Canaan YMCA's Annual Support Campaign is central to our mission of community service," YMCA Executive Director Craig Panzano said. "We believe all members of the community have a shared responsibility for raising healthy kids, providing them with the support and experiences they need to become caring, competent adults. The YMCA's Annual Support Campaign allows us to continue responding to our community's changing needs in truly meaningful ways, and one way we do this is through our annual college scholarship."

The award is granted based on academic potential, as well as work and volunteer experience. Other factors are also considered in the decision, including financial need and the person's embodiment of the YMCA's core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

"The scholarship is especially intended for individuals who have had a long-term relationship with the Y, whether as a program participant, volunteer, or employee," Panzano said. Last year's scholarship was awarded to New Canaan residents Andrew Perone and Danielle Martin, both of whom worked at the Y and served as teen representatives on the Y's board of directors. Perone is a freshman at the University of Connecticut, and Martin is studying at Wittenberg.

The application includes a statement of career and educational goals, YMCA affiliations as well as personal recommendations. Applications are available online at www.newcanaanymca.org or at the New Canaan YMCA front desk.

All applications will be reviewed by a selection committee, and applicants will be notified of the final decision in June. All applicants must fully complete an application prior to May 11 and be willing to accept their scholarship at a YMCA board meeting or other special event.
