New Canaan YMCA'S Whirlwind diving team won the YMCA national meet the weekend of May 1 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., achieving their 10th YMCA national title in the process. The championship meet was open to YMCA teams with divers between the ages of 12 and 21.

Whirlwind Diving dominated and won both the girls events and the overall meet, qualifying first-place divers directly to Speedo Nationals in Tucson, Ariz., in July. Whirlwind Diving earned 417 points, and second-place Schroeder Diving -- from Milwaukee -- earned 385 points. The Greenwich Marlins had 213 points.

New Canaan had strong performances from all the divers, and standouts included Elizabeth Fitzpatrick and Lee Christensen, of Darien; Katie Warburg, of Wilton; Kara Capossela, of Greenwich; and New Canaan's own and Northwestern-bound Hannah Singer.

Fitzpatrick, 12, won gold in the girl's 12-to-15 age group on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Fitzpatrick earned silver in the platform event as well. In the boy's 12-to-15 event, Christensen, 12, won gold on platform and bronze in the 1-meter events. Sophomore Katie Warburg had an impressive weekend in the 16-to-21 age group with gold-medal results on both 1-meter and 3-meter. Capossela -- a senior -- earned silver on 3-meter and bronze on 1-meter. Singer followed by getting fourth on both 1-meter and 3-meter.

Diving with the Greenwich Marlins, Sean Burston won gold in the boy's 12-to-15 age group at the 3-meter event, and Jake Bowtell won the boy's 12-to-15 age group 3-meter event.

"I was very proud of how everyone competed and represented our Whirlwind Diving team," head coach Joe Somma said. "Our divers are terrific examples of the YMCA values we strive to teach kids. There's a lot of hard work that goes into training for championship meets. Our team currently has over 100 divers, including four national champions. It's always a tremendous team effort to achieve strong results, and our strong coaching staff contributes 100 percent every day -- and as long as the kids are having fun and learning, we'll keep doing it. It's a great day when an athlete who has dived with you for years looks back and thanks you for teaching him strong life skills. We work hard and we have a lot of fun."

Whirlwind Diving at the New Canaan YMCA will host the USA Diving Regional 1 Championship meet from June 11 to 13.
