Between $15,000 and $20,000 in jewelry was reported stolen from a Talmadge Hill Road home March 24.
The 45-year-old resident called police at 4:40 p.m. after he arrived home and noticed his house "was in disarray" and it appeared that someone had been inside, according to the report.
Officers went to the house and found forced entry through a rear window, police said. The complainant and his wife said the alarm system was not on, according to the report.
Police believe the burglary occurred in the morning because the complainant first noticed something was wrong at 11 a.m.
The victim first left the house at 8 a.m. while his wife left at 8:45 a.m., police said. The man returned home at 11 a.m. and noticed the house looked "unusually messy," but he thought his wife had left the place like that, police said. His wife returned at 12:30 p.m., but the husband already had left again, according to the report. The woman said she also noticed the mess and assumed it was left by her husband, police said.
The two only figured out what had happened after they met at the house at 4:30 p.m., according to police.
Among the missing jewelry are rings, necklaces and earrings, police said.
The case is under investigation.
