Two of New Canaan's finest were promoted to captain Thursday morning.

Vincent DeMaio, a 24-year veteran of the department, will command the Operations Division and John DiFederico, who's been with the department 21 years, will command the Staff Services Division.

"Both men have vast experience in the department and perform exceptionally well in their roles," New Canaan Police Chief Leon Krolikowski said. "They're ready to command and take charge of these positions."

Krolikowski said three members of the department went through the application process, which included an oral test in front of a board of ranking officers and the Police Commission about how they would handle hypothetical scenarios. Though both men were recommended by Krolikowski, the commission was the ultimate decision-maker on the promotions.

The department had two captain positions open for several weeks. While a captain, Krolikowksi was named interim chief in June and promoted to chief in September. David Bender retired from the force in July.

Both DeMaio, who was a lieutenant, and DiFederico, who was a sergeant, were awarded the Investigative Section Meritorious Police Duty Unit Award in January for their roles in solving or helping to solve several crimes, including the Ponus Ridge home invasion in August 2012, and the wave of car break-ins at Waveny Park.
