NEW CANAAN — A popular town crossing guard’s holidays are coming up aces.

It took just six days for residents to reach the $5,000 goal to send crossing guard Terry Darden on his dream vacation to Las Vegas.

Darden, who works helping residents cross the street at various locations including the YMCA and Walter Stewart’s, has been on the job since 2011.

Suzanne Harrison and Nancy Roeder, both New Canaan residents, began a GoFundMe page to fund Darden’s trip on Dec. 4.

“My family lives off of South Avenue where Terry works and he’s been a presence in our kids’ lives for a very long time,” Harrison said.

“He works around the clock in all these places and never takes a vacation. When I asked him where his dream vacation would be he said Vegas. I knew there were enough members in the community who would rally for the cause,” Harrison added.

Darden has also been a presence throughout Roedner’s daily life.

“He works so hard throughout all these places and we wanted to give back to someone who is always smiling. We all have the ability to give and it’s nice to see how the community gave back to him.”

As of press time, 125 residents donated to the campaign with a total $5,275 accrued. Donation amounts ranged from five dollars up to $200 dollars. The money will serve to fund Darden and his wife’s trip to Las Vegas.

Darden said he is grateful for what the community had done for him.

“It’s always nice when people appreciate what you do,” he said while working in front of the YMCA. “The grace of God and his blessing and the town’s blessing has been incredible.”

For Darden, traveling is something he always hears about yet isn’t able to do due to work.

“People are always talking about going here and there all the time,” he said. “I just want to be able to travel as well and I’m excited to be going to Vegas with my wife.”

The GoFundME post highlighted Terry’s work ethic.

“Some of you may know Terry Darden as the jovial crossing guard on South Avenue,” the post on the GoFundMe page reads. “Others may be familiar with Terry from Walter Stewart's, Walgreen's or the YMCA where he works tirelessly every morning, night and weekend.

“Terry never goes on vacation and his dream is to visit Las Vegas. In lieu of holiday tips this year Nancy Roeder and I hope you will consider helping us raise money for a trip for 2 to Vegas. Let's make Terry's dream come true!”

Danielle Sibilia, a donor, commented on the GoFundMe page: “Terry thanks for everything you do and for keeping our kids safe. Have a wonderful holiday and enjoy your dream vacation.”

Wendy and Scott Werneburg also wished Terry the best in his upcoming trip to Sin City. “Terry, We have never met, but I know you are a blessing to our community. Thank you for all you do. Happy Holidays!”
