Town man accused of stealing from roommates
A Maple Place man was arrested Saturday by warrant on charges he stole and cashed five checks belonging to two other men from town in April, according to police.
Justin Formentin, 22, was charged in two warrants with one count each of sixth-degree larceny, fifth-degree larceny, and conspiracy to commit larceny, and two counts of third-degree forgery, according to New Canaan Police Lt. Jason Ferraro.
The men, who are roommates, reported the checks were allegedly stolen April 13, Ferraro said.
One of the men reported that $300 was missing from his room, but the woman denied taking it, according to police.
The men reported the alleged crime to police when one of them noticed a check he didn’t write for $100 written in his name, according to police.
Formentin’s bond was set at $2,000 and he is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Stamford on Aug. 21, according to police.
Mark Sherman, an attorney who is representing Formentin, said the information released by police “is grossly inaccurate. We will sort this out quickly in court and look forward to having all of Justin’s charges dismissed in due time.”
