The Town Players of New Canaan will stage an abbreviated version of the 1970 screen musical, "Scrooge!" to start the holiday season over the first two weekends of December.

With book, lyrics, and music by Leslie Bricusse, the production is an adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic holiday story, "A Christmas Carol."

The musical will be performed at the Powerhouse Theatre in Waveny Park on Fridays, Dec. 5 and 12, at 8 p.m. and on Saturdays, Dec. 6 and 13, and Sundays, Dec. 7 and 14, at 2:30 p.m.

The show includes all songs from the movie, including "I Hate People," "December the 25th," "I'll Begin Again" and "Thank You Very Much."

"The show is lively and brief enough to hold the attention of audiences of all ages," director Sheri Dean said in publicity for the show. "But it may not be appropriate for all children under age 6."

The cast of 30 includes seven children from New Canaan -- six students from Saxe Middle School and one from South Elementary School.

"We wanted to retell Dickens' story because it has influenced the way families celebrate Christmas for 170 years," Dean said. "We're all about tradition, and this is a very special and moving one."

Admission to "Scrooge!" is $15. On Saturday, Dec. 6, the price of admission for children is one unwrapped toy that will be distributed by the U.S. Marines through their Toys for Tots program.
