Three New Canaan police officers receive promotions

The New Canaan Police promoted three officers during a ceremony Thursday night at Waveny Park.
David Bender was promoted from lieutenant to captain. Bender has been with the department for 33 years and has received the Chief's Award for Excellence twice in 2000 and 2002. Bender lives in Bethel with his wife and two children.
David Ferris was promoted from sergeant to lieutenant. Ferris has been with the department for 21 years and resides in Monroe with his wife and two kids. In 1998, Ferris received the Meritorious Police Duty Award for leading the department's campaign to equip patrol cars with automated external defibrillators.
Officer John Milligan was promoted to sergeant. He has served on the force for 10 years and has received the Meritorious Police Duty Award for commitment and dedication to school resource. He lives in Brookfield with his wife and child.
According to the department, Bender will assume duties as the captain of staff services, Ferris will become the patrol shift commander for the 11 p.m to 7 a.m. shift and Milligan will be the patrol supervisor for the relief shift. Other lateral transfers within the department involve Lt. Vincent DeMaio assigned as the investigations commander and Sgt. Louis Gannon assigned to the training office.
