Leathernecks of Connecticut gathered at Giovanni’s restaurant in Darien to celebrate the 240th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps. In keeping with Marine Corps tradition, Dick Crowley, the officer in charge, served the first pieces of birthday cake to Gene Coyle and Mark Watros, the oldest and youngest marines at the luncheon. Taking part in the ceremony are, from left, Jack Harakal, of Stamford; Wilma Deicas, of New Canaan; Crowley, of New Canaan; Mark Watros, of Darien; Coyle, of Darien; John Campbell, of Norwalk; and Bill Van Loan, of Darien. Proceeds go to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, a non-profit organization that grants education tuition to marines and dependents of marines on the basis of merit and need.
