The frozen yogurt craze continued New Canaan with the opening of the first Red Mango store in Connecticut. The new location at 125 Elm Street is among more than 160 Red Mango stores now open for business across the country.

The 2011 Zagat National Chain Restaurants Survey ranked the fast growing yogurt and smoothies franchise as the nation's number one smoothie and frozen yogurt chain and the number one quick refreshment chain with healthy options.

Joe Tantillo, owner of the new Red Mango of New Canaan, is thrilled to share the "love for the swirl" and will host a grand opening celebration Friday, April 20, from 4 to 8 p.m.

During the grand opening event, 50 percent of gross sales will go to Pura Vida for Children Charity, which is dedicated to creating awareness of and funding for the needs of orphaned and impoverished children locally and abroad. In addition to donating to such an important cause, Red Mango of New Canaan will have 300 Red Mango T-shirts to give away as well as other fun treats while supplies last.

"I couldn't be happier to be involved with such a great charity," Tantillo said. "When a local volunteer and a New Canaan High School student came in to Red Mango looking for donations and told me about Pura Vida for Children, I thought it was a perfect fit since it is such a great cause and so important to the local community of New Canaan. At that point we refocused our efforts and centered our whole grand opening event around donating a portion of the proceeds from the night to help Pura Vida."

The proceeds will go to Pura Vida's New Canaan High School Club, which is partnering with Feed My Starving Children, a nonprofit that is committed to feeding the world's hungry, to host a mobile food packing event. At the event, taking place May 19 and 20 at New Canaan High School, volunteers will assemble 200,000 meals for malnourished children.
