The Pro Arte Singers will open their 39th season Sunday, Oct. 23, at 4 p.m. with a concert at the First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan, 178 Oenoke Ridge Road, under the direction of music director Arthur Sjögren.

The Pro Arte Singers and Festival Chorus, with guest chorus Charis Chamber Voices, will perform Faure's much-loved Requiem, accompanied by organ, harp, and horns. Music by Rheinberger, Saint-Saens, Bruckner and others will also be on the program.

New Canaan singers in Pro Arte include Ellen Sisson and Sherry Tate. Single concert tickets at $25, or $20 for seniors and students, will be available at the door. Three-concert season subscriptions at $75, or $60 for seniors and students, also are available.

Music director Sjögren and a small group of professional singers who shared his dream of performing the world's finest choral music formed the Pro Arte Singers in 1973. Each year since, they have grown in artistic achievement and critical acclaim through their annual concert series, professional recordings, appearances around the state in classical concert series, and the regular commission of new works by prominent composers. Today, they continue to be distinguished as the only fully professional chorus in Fairfield and Westchester, N.Y., counties.

The Pro Arte Singers is a nonprofit ensemble, supported in part by private contributions and public grants, including one from the Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism.
