This spring, the New Canaan Garden Club and the Town of New Canaan are joining forces again with the Chamber of Commerce, TD Bank and Rotary Club of New Canaan to organize New Canaan's Clean Your Mile. Beginning last year, the Clean Your Mile effort now includes three components:New Canaan citizens individually tackling their neighborhoods; community groups scouring public spaces including parks and schools; and the Chamber's efforts with merchants to clean up sidewalks, storage areas and parking spaces surrounding the shops and restaurants.
This expanded Clean Your Mile effort is scheduled for Saturday, April 30, and Sunday, May 1. The New Canaan Garden Club and the Chamber of Commerce, along with Rotary and TD Bank, will work in cooperation with the Town of New Canaan's departments of inland wetlands and watercourses, parks, transfer station, highway and public works. The sponsors plan to continue active expansion of the neighborhood effort initiated in 2008. Individuals, families or groups who are willing to clean up the roadside trash on their street can contact Catharine Sturgess at 203-856-2679 or email@example.com to receive an assignment.
Once again the Rotary has donated garbage bags for use by all Clean Your Mile volunteers. The bags can be picked up any time after April 1 at either the Public Works Department in Town Hall, the Inland Watercourses Department at Irwin Park or TD Bank at the corner of Elm and Grove streets.
The Transfer Station will place dumpsters for trash collection at the Elm Street-Lumberyard Commuter parking lot and by the softball fields in Waveny Park on the designated weekend. In addition, Public Works can be contacted at 203-594-3054 for pickup of large objects
The New Canaan Garden Club, a member of the Garden Club of America, works to restore, improve and protect the quality of the environment through educational programs and action in the fields of conservation and civic improvement. The main objective of Rotary is service in the community, in the workplace and throughout the world. The Inland Wetlands Department works to preserve and protect the wetlands and watercourses from random, unnecessary and unregulated uses, disturbance or destruction which is in the public interest and is essential to the health, welfare and safety of the citizens of the Town. TD Bank's mission is to strengthen the fabric of neighborhoods, and improve and enrich the lives of community members by supporting local organizations. The Chamber of Commerce leads an united effort to make New Canaan a great place to be in business.
