Pedestrian hit on Park Street given verbal warning
The woman who was hit by a car outside the New Canaan train station Thursday was issued a verbal warning for crossing the street against a crosswalk signal, police said Monday.
The 45-year-old pedestrian, who police believe had just gotten off the train, was crossing Park Street at about 7:25 p.m. when a vehicle struck her, police said.
The New Canaan woman was on the northwestern corner of Park and Elm streets while the vehicle, a Mercedez 4Matic, was traveling south on Park Street, according to police. Witnesses at the scene told police that the traffic light was green for Park Street traffic.
"The pedestrian was attempting to walk across Park Street in an easterly direction and stepped off the curb," Sgt. Carol Ogrinc said in a press release.
The victim was hit by the right front side of the vehicle and sustained a broken leg, police said.
The driver, a 24-year-old male from South Salem, N.Y., immediately stopped and remained at the scene, according to police. Chief of Police Leon Krolikowski said the driver was "shaken up" but was being "very cooperative."

The woman was transported to Norwalk Hospital, where she stayed until Friday, Ogrinc said.
"It looks like she's going to be OK, but we're really concerned about her condition," Krolikowski said at the scene on Thursday.
The northern part of the intersection was closed Thursday night so police could investigate the accident.
"This is kind of a fatal accident scenario the way we're investigating, but we don't believe it's going to be," Krolikowski said at the scene.
Early reports stated that the victim was 50 and also from South Salem, N.Y.
Though he doesn't know if that was the case, the chief noted that it's common for people leaving the train station not to pay attention when crossing the intersection. Krolikowski said the police department is planning to do some education on safe crossing for pedestrians in the area.
The investigation is continuing.
