Two New Canaan youth wrestlers made it to the USA Wrestling Connecticut state finals on Sunday. Justin Mastroianni and Tyler Sung each took first place in the regional qualifier in Milford to win the right to compete in the 2013 Connecticut State Youth Wrestling Championships.

Each division consisted of 16 wrestlers from around the state, all competing for the gold. Mastroianni wrestled in the 70-pound novice division and made it to the championship match to claim second place in the 16-wrestler tournament. In a competitive championship match Mastroianni nearly defeated a five-time state champion in a 7-6 decision.

In 2012, Mastroianni became the first ever New Canaan wrestler to win the state championship.

Sung captured first place in the 75-pound novice division by defeating Fisheye's Hunter Fleming in the championship match, 6-1. Sung was also chosen as the 2013 Connecticut state youth most outstanding wrestler of the novice division. With the win, Sung is now a state and national champion.

With their wins, Mastroianni and Sung qualified to compete at the New England Youth National Tournament in March.
