On Wednesday, Jan. 4, the New Canaan Beautification League will present a program "Orchids: The Houseplant for the New Millennium" with Carri Raven-Riemann, owner of the orchidPhile, a wholesale orchid business in Stamford that specializes in quality phalaenopsis orchids.

Raven-Riemann will present an educational lecture on orchids, answer questions about them, and provide orchids for sale. Credit cards can be taken. The program is free and open to the public and will be held at the New Canaan Library from 9 to 11 a.m.

Raven-Riemann has collected and propagated orchids for more than 30 years and is the recipient of more than 100 American Orchid Society flower and culture awards. She is a co-founder of the International Phalaenopsis Alliance, a former Trustee of the Greater New York Orchid Society and an accredited orchid judge for the American Orchid Society. Anyone with orchid problems can bring them to the program for diagnosis.

Membership in the New Canaan Beautification League is open, as are the programs. Monthly programs are held from October to June, and are of varied topics, informative and educational. The group's focus is the beautification of New Canaan.
