One Book One Town underway
New Canaan Library invites the entire community to read "In the Heart of the Sea," from now through April 4 as part of the "One Book One Town" reading project.
The library's mission for One Book New Canaan is "to strengthen our community through the power of one book."
The book will appeal to all readers.
Nathaniel Philbrick retells the tale of the 1821 sinking of the whale ship Essex after it was rammed by a whale, the true story that inspired Moby Dick. The ship's crew then set sail in tiny boats for South America. This is an account of the human spirit under duress, a tale of survival against all odds.
Philbrick used primary documents, including an account from the ship's cabin boy, in recounting the chilling events of the maritime disaster.
Philbrick will speak about the book at 7 p.m. Friday, April 4.
Students at Saxe Middle and New Canaan High Schools will also read the book, as do many New Canaan book groups. There will be discussions of the book at various New Canaan locations throughout the eight weeks.
There will be competitions at the library and several New Canaan businesses, and there will be special events throughout own during this time.
Reading experiences can be shared via Twitter using #OneBookNewCanaan, as well as Facebook and Instagram.
