Norwalk Hospital Foundation received a $20,000 competitive grant from the Fairfield County Community Foundation in support of Norwalk Hospital's dental clinic.

Each year, the clinic provides dental care for more than 1,700 people throughout Fairfield County who otherwise might not be able to receive necessary dental care. The clinic offers a full range of services -- oral exams, cleanings, surgical procedures and orthodontics.

Since opening in 1980, the dental clinic has been meeting the needs of under-served individuals who reside in communities served by Norwalk Hospital. Over the years, this population has grown dramatically, generating a much greater demand for services. The clinic has also become the primary provider of dental services for those with developmental, mental and physical disabilities.

The grant from the Fairfield County Community Foundation will help ensure two key targets are achieved: 1) all patients will be compassionately cared for regardless of their ability to pay and 2) will be informed of preventive home dental care instruction.

"We are so grateful for the support and generosity of the Fairfield County Community Foundation," shared Mary Franco, president, Norwalk Hospital Foundation. "Oral health is very important to one's general health and well-being. This grant helps to ensure that all of our patients have access to quality dental care, regardless of their ability to pay."

"The Fairfield County Community Foundation is proud to invest in the Norwalk Hospital Dental Clinic because they provide vital oral health services to low-income patients throughout the Greater Norwalk area," said Yolanda Caldera-Durant, FCCF program director.

In addition to providing dental care, the clinic participates in community outreach events and health fairs offering dental screenings and educational programs to the public. The clinic also participates in teaching collaboratives with Norwalk Community College and The University of Bridgeport Fones School of Dental Hygiene.
