Members of the Darien News staff were honored with six awards by the Connecticut chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists in North Haven last Thursday.

Reporter Maggie Gordon earned first place in the Community Non-Daily Features category for her story "Post 53: An adreneline rush, reality check for teen EMTs."

Gordon participated in an eight-hour shift with members of Post 53 in order to write her story.

Gordon also received a first-place nod in the In-Depth Series category for her work on the drug abuse package titled, "It happens here: A look at teen drug use in New Canaan." The package was written by Gordon and Brittany Lyte.

Collectively, Hearst Connecticut Newspaper Group won 108 awards, including 40 first-place honors. In addition to the News, the Hearst group includes the Stamford Advocate, Greenwich Time, the Connecticut Post, the Danbury News-Times, and weeklies Greenwich Citizen, Darien News, Fairfield Citizen, Westport News, Greater New Milford Spectrum and Norwalk Citizen.
