A 50-year-old Smith Ridge Road resident reported his credit card information was stolen at 2:36 p.m. Feb. 14.
The day before he made his report to police, the complainant received an e-mail that appeared to be from the billing department of America Online. The e-mail asked him to fill out a form with his personal information including his credit card and social security numbers.
Police said after he filled out the form, he called AOL and they informed him that this was not an e-mail from them and was a scam. The e-mail came from the address firstname.lastname@example.org. Police said the complainant cancelled his two major credit cards immediately and that the matter is still under investigation.
