A 15-year-old girl was charged last week after police said she threatened another teen via Instagram on Christmas Day.

The 14-year-old victim and her father reported Dec. 26 the offender posted a threatening message that seemed to be targeted at her on the social media app a day earlier, according to the report. Police said the victim responded to the message and the offender confirmed that it was directed at her, according to the report.

The post, which was visible to multiple people, was "not a simple threatening message," police said. They described it as "hateful" and "harmful" message.

Both girls are New Canaan High School students. It is not clear if there was a picture with the online posting.

The suspect was charged with second-degree threatening and referred to juvenile court in Stamford.
