East requested gently used books to donate to a school that lost its library during Superstorm Sandy.
The school's reading team sent a flyer home encouraging elementary school students to read and get sponsors, requesting 1 cent for every minute read. Valente's mother, Michaela, is a special education secretary at East, and Valente noticed the flyer on her mother's desk.
"As an avid reader, I felt obligated to help out in any way I could, which led me to extend the offer to my soccer club, New York Rush Patriots," Valente said.
Valente sent an email to her coach, Steve Davis, asking for donations of gently used books. She had no idea that the response would be overwhelming.
New York Rush Club members collected more than 300 books at practices and games from mid-March to April 11, which Valente packed up and delivered to East.
