The New Canaan sixth grade girls basketball team went 2-0 over the weekend by defeating New Milford and Darien.

New Canaan put one of its best efforts all season on Saturday, and the team was rewarded with its first victory, a 23-18 decision at home against New Milford.

Riley Krug established herself as a strong presence on defense early in the game. New Canaan managed a 12-10 halftime lead, largely due to some slick passing by Maeve Selvaggi and several great dribble penetrations to the basket by newcomer Alexa O'Neil.

New Canaan held New Milford scoreless throughout the third quarter, and a couple of left-handed hook shots by Leigh Charlton helped to extend the lead to 16-10 going into the fourth quarter.

New Milford tested New Canaan's mettle with eight quick points to begin the final quarter. Great defensive play by Lauren Sechan, Emma Barker and Lucy Hudson kept the girls out in front by two points and set up an exciting finish.

With a minute left in the game, New Canaan turned the ball over and New Milford stood poised to tie the game with a breakaway layup. Annie Minaglia hustled back on defense and brought the crowd to its feet with a monster rejection. Minaglia hit a clutch free throw in the final seconds, securing the victory.

New Canaan came away with its second nail-biting win in as many days by edging Darien 24-21 on Sunday afternoon.

New Canaan took an early lead with Lauren Leask scoring six points in the first quarter. On defense, Sechan, Krug and Freia Mierendorf came up with several steals. At halftime, New Canaan held a 13-8 lead.

In the third quarter, Charlton scored on three consecutive baskets. The girls were in sync and displayed their excellent passing skills. Krug also scored a basket raising the score in New Canaan's favor, 16-15.

In a competitive fourth quarter, Mierendorf scored four points, and Selvaggi and Minaglia both scored two points.
