STAMFORD -- They come at you in waves.

The New Canaan High School girls ice hockey team is relentless on the ice.

There is no rest. There is no escape.

In the end, there is only surrender by the opposition.

New Canaan advanced to the Connecticut Coaches Association state championship game Thursday night by defeating Ridgefield, 6-1 in the state semifinals at Terry Conners ice rink.

The win means that New Canaan (23-1) will go for yet another state title Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Yale University's Ingalls rink against Thursday night's winner between Simsbury and Hall-Conard Co-op.

"Playing New Canaan, it's like holding a stick of dynamite in your hands," said Ridgefield head coach Paul Fabbri after the Tigers lost for the third time this season to New Canaan. "You hold it and wait and wait and wait. Then BOOM! Our girls gave me everything they had. But New Canaan is just that good."

Indeed. And leading the parade as always was Olivia Hompe. She scored four goals for the Rams including a pair of breakaways. Madzie Carroll and Eloise Somerby also tallied for New Canaan, which led 1-0 after one period and 4-1 after two periods.

"Taking Olivia Hompe off the New Canaan team, it's like taking Michael Jordan off the Chicago Bulls," Fabbri said. "We held her down for a while but eventually she still scores. There isn't an answer to stop her at this level. She's just too good and she generates too much energy and too many chances for others."

Holly Burwick registered three assists while Abbey Buckenheimer added a pair for the Rams. Britt Gardella had 14 saves.

For Ridgefield (14-6-1), Heather Ogden made 30 saves while Maggie Philbin added two saves in the closing minutes. Allie Schiffer scored the lone Tigers' goal off a feed from Anna Marcus.

With his team on a roll, New Canaan head coach Rich Bulan can't wait for Saturday's state final.

"We have depth. We dump the puck in and forecheck and forecheck," Bulan said. "It's all about puck possession and wearing the opposition out. The girls follow the lead of Olivia (Hompe) and Madzie (Carroll). We're so ready for Saturday."
