New Canaan man charged with DUI, allegedly fell asleep at the wheel

NEW CANAAN — A New Canaan man was charged with drunk driving after allegedly falling asleep at the wheel in the middle of the road.
On Oct. 1 at 8:15 a.m., New Canaan police received reports of a vehicle stopped in the middle in of Old Stamford Road near the Merritt Parkway. The driver was asleep at the wheel.
When officers arrived and approached the driver, Collin Eldred of West Hills Road, they smelled alcohol on Eldred’s breath and coming from the vehicle. Eldred, 32, failed a field sobriety test. A Breathalyzer test later showed Eldred’s blood alcohol content was .246.
After failing the field sobriety test, Eldred was taken into custody for charges of operating under the influence. He was released on a $250 bond and given a court date of Oct. 12.
