On May 22, more than 150 New Canaan Girl Scouts in first through 12th grades will gather in the New Canaan High School Auditorium to advance to the next level of Scouting and honor Girl and Adult Award recipients. This year former New Canaan Girl Scout Alexandra Schott, and current ensign in The United States Navy, will give the keynote address.
Schott was a Girl Scout through graduation from New Canaan High School in 2005. She earned her Silver Award by planning and presenting a dance project with Norwalk Head Start children. As a Senior Girl Scout she earned her Gold Award, the highest Girl Award in Scouting, working with the Family Children Agency conducting a New Canaan preschool toy drive and redistribution of the toys to children in need in Norwalk.
After graduation, she attended the University of Rochester on a Navy ROTC scholarship. In May 2009, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in applied mathematics and was commissioned as a Surface Warfare Officer in the United States Navy.
Schott is assigned as the electrical officer on the USS Winston S. Churchill, a guided missile destroyer stationed in Norfolk, Va. Schott and the Churchill just returned from a seven-month Fifth Fleet deployment focused on air defense and anti-piracy operations in the Middle East. She hopes to continue her military service by becoming a Navy dentist after her initial sea duty commitment.
New Canaan boasts 10 Silver Award recipients this year. Scouts in eighth through 10th grades completed a series of prerequisites culminating in a community service project with a minimum of 40 hours. Recipients include. Tara Brunner, Emma Leslie and Katherine Luciano from Troop 50164; Sydney Boston, Maddie Dijs and Julia Simpson from Troop 50496; and Janelle Gerardi, Victoria Gerardi, Ellen Hoover, Jessica Karl from Troop 50563.
