The fifth grade girls New Canaan basketball team won its first game of the season, a competitive 17-16 decision against Darien YMCA at the Middlesex Middle School in Darien on Sunday.

New Canaan got baskets from KK Marcus and Natasha Tchir as the first quarter ended with the scored tied at 4-4. Darien scored three unanswered baskets in the second quarter for a 10-4 halftime advantage.

Abby Carstensen started the second half for New Canaan with two baskets, closing the deficit to 10-8. Kendall Patten tied the game at 10-10 with a basket of her own.

Chloe Shorten, Carstensen, and Marcus all had baskets in the second half. Libby Tedford played strong defense to keep Darien's top scorer at bay, as New Canaan held on for its first win of the season.
