New Canaan eight grade red steamrolls past Wilton
The New Canaan eighth grade Red football team overpowered Wilton Black to maintain a perfect 3-0 record on the season in a 35-12 victory.
After the bruising defensive line of Gardner Read, John Hetherington and tough Charlie Erdmann forced a three-and-out, New Canaan took over the ball at its own 40. After DeFranco converted a fourth-and-seven with a seven yard run, quarterback Justin Clark marched the offense into Wilton territory and connected with Matt Cognetta for a 39-yard touchdown. Clark kicked the extra point to make it 7-0
Protected by strong blocking by David Noonan, Sean Jensen, Robbie Smith, Sam Larson and Miles Turpin, Clark mixed an eight-yard blast by Femia and two quick passes to Andrew DeFranco -- including a 25-yard strike -- that resulted in the second score. Clark kicked the PAT to make it 14-0.
Wilton struck back with a 45-yard touchdown run and trailed 14-6 after a missed extra point.
New Canaan running back and defensive end Kyle Smith scored three touchdowns and racked up over 200 yards rushing through massive holes created by Read, Jensen, Turpin, Ryan Rigione and Kieran Schaney.
New Canaan scored its third touchdown when Smith scampered 15 yards to make it 21-6.
Smith and Femia continued to wear down the Wilton defense on the ground. After Clark hit Jarrett Torromeo for a quick gain, Smith broke loose for a 10-yard touchdown to drive the score to 28-12.
As Wilton went to the air, the New Canaan rush began to pressure the air game, causing an acrobatic interception by Femia, who then followed up with a 22-yard scamper to drive the score to 35-12.
Justin Clark was perfect for the night with five extra point kicks. The game ended with DeFranco making a great open field tackle, and then sealing the final surge with an interception. New Canaan's offense racked up more than 300 yards in the win.
