New Canaan YMCA synchronized swimmers earn gold medal with teamwork and precise timing
The New Canaan YMCA hosted the Junior East Zone Synchronized Swimming Championship on Feb. 10-13. The New Canaan YMCA Aquianas Junior team of Diya Banerjee, Alice Chidley (Darien), Kate Dalia, Emma Flynn, Alexandra Lin, Isabella Montgomery and Eliza Sturgeon earned a gold medal.
"This team works really well together," said Head Coach Jen Muzyk. "It takes strong teamwork and precise timing to swim a routine like theirs."
There were a total of 167 athletes representing 14 teams from across the Northeast competing at the meet.
In the trio event, Hannah Vogel, Alice Chidley and Emma Flynn earned a silver medal. In the duet event, Kate Dalia and Eliza Sturgeon placed second, Alexandra Lin and Emily Roney placed third and Chidley and Flynn placed fifth.
In the solo event, Lin took third and Dalia took sixth. In the figures event, Isabella Montgomery, Chidley, Sturgeon, Roney and Diya Banerjee placed first, second, third, fourth and ninth, respectively.
Three of the Aquiana's swimmers, Montgomery, Chidley and Lin, were named to the 2012 East Zone Junior Championship 13/15 Age Group All Star Team based on figure scores and a split test.
The New Canaan YMCA Aquianas is preparing for its next meet, the Senior East Zone Championship to be held March 9-11 in Tonawanda, NY.
