New Canaan U14 girls Black soccer team takes down Darien
The U14 New Canaan girls Black team scored a 3-2 home win against Darien to move to 2-0.
Good passing and possession keyed the victory.
New Canaan took control from the start and solid defending and an alert midfield kept goalkeeper Hailey Towbin well protected, but she was up to the task when called upon to make several saves and patrol the box.
New Canaan took a 1-0 lead when Maeve Selvaggi dribbled up to the left edge of the box and found Nichole Labadie on the left side, and Labadie fired a long, quick, left-footed strike high into the center of the net.
New Canaan came out strong in the second half and went up 2-0 when Braeden Dial took a Lexi Smicka pass and rocketed a near post right-footed strike from the left of the box that the Darien keeper managed to get a hand on but could not prevent from going into the net.
After Darien's first goal, New Canaan was awarded a penalty kick after a Darien hand ball inside the box. Dial unselfishly gave the ball to Walshin, who firmly converted the kick above the keeper high into the center back netting.
Darien converted a penalty kick of its own, but New Canaan held on for the win.
Second half goalkeeper Skylar Severance was kept quite active and did well to help preserve the win. Alana Tonghini and Cali Brannan were very active in the second half in their respective striker and midfield roles. Sisters Abby and Nicole Weiss anchored the New Canaan defense.
