On Sunday in Greenwich, the New Canaan Red U11 girls soccer team fell just short against a physical and aggressive Greenwich team, 2-1. Greenwich jumped out to an early lead in the first half. New Canaan worked hard to get back in the game, but many of its shots on goal were deflected.

Early in the second half, the defense turned up the heat on Greenwich. Led by Joelle Anselmo, Meghan Kloud, Katherine Marcus and Kayla Beck, the defense repeatedly thwarted Greenwich attacks. Midway through the second half, New Canaan tied the game on a powerful shot from Jesse Eccleston that sailed high in the air and landed in the top right corner of the net.

In the final 20 minutes, India Ontero, Ryann Mushkin and Claire Ross led a charge in which New Canaan had several shots on goal to take the lead but came up empty.

With five minutes left in the game, Greenwich received a free kick from 10 yards. New Canaan set up a wall but Greenwich put together a quick pass and a great shot which somehow found the net for the game-winner.

New Canaan's Abby Carstensen and Lauren Bisceglia played goalie and made several difficult saves.
