State Rep. John Hetherington (R-125) is reminding shoppers that from Aug. 21 through 27 they can buy most clothing and footwear less than $300 without paying the Connecticut sales tax.

"This relief is more significant this year," Hetherington said. "The long-standing exemption for clothing under $50 was eliminated as part of this year's tax increase."

Effective July 1, the sales tax rate was increased generally from 6 to 6.35 percent, with a higher rate for certain luxury goods. First marked for extinction, the annual sales tax free week was restored after a public outcry.
