New Canaan Red Bantam fourth grade football team comes up with strong defensive effort to defeat Fairfield.
New Canaan Red picked up a 28-6 victory over Fairfield on Sunday, thanks in large part to strong play by the defensive unit.
On the opening possession, New Canaan drove the length of the field with hard runs by Nick Gilio, Ryan McAleer and Robert Evans. The drive was culminated with a 39-yard touchdown run by quarterback Andrew Smith. Gilio successfully converted the extra point with a run. Outstanding blocks by Steven Hoge, Alec Kazlauskas, Andrew Morse, Charlie Mullaney, Greg Korsun, Jack Anderson and Thomas Marshall enabled New Canaan to score first.
New Canaan got the ball back after a hard-hitting defensive effort led by Nicky Hoge, Tyler Saitta, Thomas Marshall, Charlie Mullaney, Greg Korsun, Ryan McAleer, Xander Arnone, Evans and Colby Gardiner. New Canaan began the drive on its own 20 and drove the ball to their own 40-yard line. Nick Gilio capped the drive with a 60-yard touchdown run. The extra point was successfully run in by McDonald, making the score 14-0.
After another defensive stop by New Canaan, the offense took over the ball early in the third quarter. Ryan McAleer ended that drive with a 41-yard touchdown run. The entire right side of the New Canaan offensive line, led by Marshall, Mullaney, and Steven Hoge opened the hole for Ryan to score. The point after was successfully run in by Riana Afshar, making the score 21-0 at the end of the third quarter.
Fairfield answered back with a scoring drive of its own to cut the lead to 21-6.

With little time left, Evans sealed the game with an interception and ran 61 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was successfully run in by Andrew Smith, making the final score 28-6.
