NEW CANAAN — Police said a 51-year-old Stamford man was caught driving drunk with a loaded gun in his pocket.

On April 7 around 9:20 p.m., an officer pulled over Brian D. Gerard, of Sylvan Knoll Road while he was driving southbound in the northbound lane on Old Stamford Road. The officer smelled alcohol coming from Gerard and asked him to perform a field sobriety test. During the test, Gerard did not follow instructions and kept putting his hand in his pocket. When asked, Gerard told the officer he didn’t have any weapons on him. The officer then did a pat down and found a loaded Walter PPK/S in a holster in Gerard’s front left jacket pocket.

The officer secured the weapon, which Gerard had a valid permit for, and finished conducting the field sobriety test, which Gerard failed. The Stamford man was subsequently taken into custody on charges of driving under the influence, failing to drive right and carrying a firearm under the influence.

Gerard refused a blood alcohol content test and was released on a bond of $3,250. He will appear in court on April 20.; @erin_kayata
