Get ready for summer at the New Canaan Nature Center's Camp Jamboree & Registration Kick-off on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The popular nature center camp has been in operation for more than 40 years and has become a summer tradition for generations of kids. This year, returning camp directors Geoff McCann and Anna Zilenski, along with other camp staff, will host a Jamboree and Registration Kick-off where families can find out all about 2012 sessions and register on the spot to guarantee their place. Those who register at the kick-off on Feb. 25 can also benefit from 10 percent savings on all July and August camp sessions.

"We're excited to see familiar faces as well as new campers to our jamboree," McCann said. "It's a great way for us to introduce what's new for 2012, and an opportunity for campers to come visit and get a dose of summer fun during the cold winter months."

What the nature center camp staff is most excited about this year is the redesigned and expanded adventure camp program for ages 8-14. The sessions offer a range of experiences and challenges that allow older campers to work towards goals and earn rewards. Apprentice adventurers (ages 8-10) learn basic skills and challenges for nature exploration and each week incorporates an extended campfire dinner on the property. Journeyman Adventurers (ages 10-12) travel off-site to explore the trails and waterways of Southwest Conn. and spend one overnight campout per weekly session at the Nature Center. Master Adventurers (ages 11-14) head off on guided 5-6 day expeditions to hike, paddle and experience the thrill of the wilderness from the Green Mountains of Vermont to the Finger Lakes of New York.

"What's unique about Adventure Camp is that it creates a whole new experience for those who have already been here as younger campers," McCann said. "Plus, the younger Apprentice Adventurers learn from the older kids as they work their way up to one day becoming Master Adventurers themselves."

As in past year, the New Canaan Nature Center Summer Camp experience for 3-7 year olds revolves around fun nature-based adventures throughout the 40-acre property. Each week-long session features a new theme that is explored through age-appropriate activities that could include live animals, art and music, field games, habitat exploration, orienteering and nature skills.
