As part of the New Canaan Library's yearlong celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Salant Room and the Salant Lecture series, the library will inaugurate the Salant Integrity Award at a private dinner Oct. 17 at the Woodway Country Club in Darien.

The dedication of the Salant Room and the accompanying annual lecture series was established in memory of former New Canaan resident Dick Salant a legendary journalist and past president of CBS News.

The Salant Integrity Award is a new honor which will be awarded to journalists from the worlds of print, television, and radio, and who embody the spirit of integrity and honesty in reporting that Dick Salant represented. The award will be presented to Bob Schieffer, chief washington correspondent and the CBS News anchor of "Face the Nation."

In addition, Scott Pelley of CBS News will be presenting a Lifetime Achievement Award to NewCanaan's own Jeffrey Fager.

The Richard Salant Lecture Series has featured notable names in journalism. Past Salant Lecture speakers have included Schieffer Walter Cronkite, Mike Wallace, Andy Rooney, Brian Williams, Tom Brokaw, Sean McManus and Roger Goodman. This year the library has hosted two speakers, Ann Curry of NBC News and Kate O'Brien, president of Al Jazeera America.
