New Canaan 11-year-old all-stars defeat Hebron, lose to Newtown over weekend
The New Canaan 11-year-old all-stars stayed on a roll with a win in their first game of the second round of the State tournament in Newtown on Saturday by defeating Hebron 6-4.
New Canaan received great pitching performances from Mikey Pelli and Dillon Abate. Pelli pitched four innings of nearly perfect ball and retired the first 11 hitters he faced. He retired the side in order in the first three innings and retired the first two batters in the fourth inning before yielding a two-out single. He promptly induced the next hitter to fly out to right to end the inning.
Abate started the game with a single which was followed by a long home run to center field by Robby Jones to give New Canaan the early 2-0 lead. The game was still 2-0 in the fourth when Justin Stemerman singled, stole second and third and came home on a wild pitch. JD Sparks and Abate drew a pair of two-out walks and both scored on a single by Pelli that went by the left fielder to the fence to make the score 5-0. Jones lined a hit to left to score Pelli to make it 6-0.
Abate pitched the final two innings, allowing two earned runs to close out the 6-4 victory.
After a 2-1 loss against Newtown on Sunday, New Canaan is back in action today at 5:30 p.m. in Newtown.
