For the last half century, the white brick manor at 104 Dans Highway in New Canaan has laid vacant. Aside from a pair of caretakers who keep the lawns meticulously manicured, the 52-acre estate has stood quiet for some time.

Huguette Clark purchased the property, dubbed Le Beau Chateau Clark, in 1952. She never spent a night there.

According to Bill Dedman of msnbc.com, Clark died Tuesday morning. Clark had been staying at Beth Israel Medical Center under various pseudonyms, most recently as "Harriet Chase," to protect her privacy.

Clark had reportedly been staying in a hospital room for more than 20 years even though she was presumed to be healthy.

Dedman reported that he received a brief statement from Clark's attorney's office, Wallace Bock, confirming her death. "Madame Clark's passing is a sad event for everyone who loved and respected her over the years," the statement read. "She died as she wanted, with dignity and privacy. We intend to continue to respect her wishes for privacy."

Privacy was something of an obsession, or at least a quality most associated with Clark. Even in death she insisted on the utmost privacy.

According to msnbc.com, she arranged for a tomb in the Clark family mausoleum, with no mass or service. Reportedly, her attorney, Wallace Bock, refused to let her family, half great nieces and nephews on her father's side, know when the interment would take place.

Having inherited a huge fortune from her father, a wealthy copper miner, Clark has used that money to ensure her privacy throughout her life.

The last available photograph of Clark was taken in 1930.

Clark purchased various mansions around the country with her fortune, including Le Beau Chateau Clark.

The New Canaan News published a story on that empty mansion and the mystery of Clark in March 2010.
