Jose Mejia, 39, of 45 Spring St., Ossining, N.Y., was arrested May 9 on charges of operating under the influence of alcohol, failure to drive right and driving without a license.

New Canaan police officers were dispatched to Smith Ridge Road, near Michigan Road, at about 6 p.m. for a one-vehicle accident, according to the report.

Mejia, who was traveling south, had driven off the road and hit a tree, police said. When an officer approached the driver, who was alone in his Jeep, he immediately detected an odor of alcohol and noticed Mejia's eyes were glassy and bloodshot, according to the report. He was administered a field sobriety test, which he failed, police said.

A woman who witnessed the accident from her car told police Mejia cut her off and swerved around until he went off the road and hit the tree, the report stated. Police said both airbags were deployed and there was heavy damage to the front of the vehicle, which had to be towed, but Mejia was not injured.

He posted $250 bond and is scheduled to appear in court May 20.
